My kindergarten students are just entering the first year of their long academic career. Providing them with the necessary resources to ease their transition into school is key. I want to allow them to learn the way they learn best: through movement, hands-on play, art, exploration, and self-discovery.
My class is composed of a diverse set of learners with a variety of strengths and weaknesses; however, my students all have one thing in common: the desire to explore new concepts deeply, so they can best understand the world around them.
My Project
My class needs a shelf to store all of the math games, puzzles, toys and tools we use throughout the year. After our whole group math lessons each day, my students are given time to self-direct their learning. They choose which math concepts they want to learn more about. Students work with numbers and counting to 100 activities, sort the different types of coins, create with blocks and building toys, or focus on learning addition and subtraction through hands-on exploration. One thing is consistent, each skill requires a lot of tools that can be tricky to manage.
Currently they are stored in drawers, which gets messy - having a shelf will allow them to organize these resources and find the ones they want to work with easily and independently!
This shelf will allow them to see all of the choices that are available to them. Sometimes when resources are out of sight, they fall out of mind! Being able to see them easily will allow them to continue to utilize all of the resources. It will also make cleanup easier each day. My Kindergarten students do a great job of cleaning up, but occasionally we find pieces of games on the floor. Having them in shelves will allow them to put each piece where it goes - rather than just dropping it inside the drawer that is the closest. It will help to provide my Kindergarten students with more independence, which is one of the most important skills they need to learn!
