My students need a document camera to improve the overall classroom learning experience, share writing, and join in on classroom read alouds.

"Those who dare to teach must never cease to learn".- John Cotton Dana This quote has such a significance to me because I truly believe that my students teach me more than I teach them. In order for my students to be fully engaged in our daily lessons, this document projector will be a perfect fit!
My classroom consists of 25 students.
They are predominately African American (72%). With Caucasian (16%) and Bi-racial (12%) students as well. My school district is in a low socioeconomic city with high crime and drug problems. A lot of my student's parents do not work and have public assistance and housing assistance. As of this year we had 93% of students who qualified for free and/or reduced lunch. However, due to new laws, every student now receives free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students have severe behavior issues including ADHD, ODD, and Emotional Disturbances. I also have 6 students with IEP's and have to differentiate my instruction for all of them. Even with all of these struggles and hurdles my students face, they are extremely hard working and genuinely love being at school. I feel that it is their safe place, their time to be themselves and let go of all the stresses outside of school.
In my classroom I have a chalkboard. It is very hard for me to constantly write everything on the board I need them to see. This also uses a lot of valuable time that we are running out of before our state tests. If my class had the document camera, my students would be able to see from my book and worksheets rather than have me write everything- when I can just show them. Not only can I show them, I can model how I want them to complete tasks. Our school is also using the Lucy Calkins text. Everyday we do a Writer's Workshop, where students write and share their work. This is called the Author's Chair, which is a huge component in their writing. Students share their work and feel a sense of pride while doing it. If I had the document camera, my students would be able to not only hear each others work, but see it as well. My students also love when I read to them, this will let me turn read alouds into a shared learning/reading experience.
This donation would make a huge difference in my students lives.
I feel like when I am writing on the board, it is wasting valuable/precious time. I'm sure that it is also not that fun for my students as well. If they were able to see what I am trying to show them without having to copy it on the board, they would be more engaged and interested on our lessons. My students work very hard on their writing, this would definitely amp up their excitement when they are in the Author's Chair!
