I am a second-year teacher working with about 70 8th graders. We are from a rural area, and the majority of my students come from low-income families. As with most teenagers, my students struggle to enjoy reading. I have 25-30 minutes of silent reading time every single class period, because like anything, to be a better reader, you must practice.
I am looking for lower lexile books that are still high interest and have mature content.
By growing my classroom library with these types of novels, I am hoping to motivate my more apathetic readers and even find that “one” book that ignites their love or reading.
My Project
When it is nearing the end of the school year, the routines you set in place early on seem to lose their luster. I am always looking for ways to spice up reading time and furthermore, reach those handful of students that haven't quite found their love of reading yet. I want to add books to my classroom that support lower lexile readers, but still house the more mature content that my students are interested in.
There is no better feeling than when a student comes to you, asking for a book recommendation.
This shows they care about your opinion and trust that you know them well enough to pick out a book that will resonate with them. It is even better when they fly through the book and ask you again.
