My students need a class set (24 copies) of "A Separate Peace."
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As an 11th grade English teacher, my job is not only to teach the Missouri state standards, but to prepare my students for taking the ACT and SAT, as well as preparing them for college level work. Our school's mission is to assist each student in gaining admission to college, while preparing them for success in a collegiate setting.
My students, however, are four to five grade levels behind where they should be for reading and writing. They are extremely bright and industrious, but need to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. Our school only has a few class sets of novels, but all are way above my students' current comprehension level and are too low-interest for them to become invested in. Because my students are all living in poverty, expecting them to buy their own books for class is not an option.
Therefore, a class set of books is needed. "A Separate Peace" would be a great novel for my students because the themes and characters are universal. I can use this book to facilitate students' interest in reading, while also teaching pivotal ways to comprehend and analyze text. The book is also ideal for teaching character analysis, plot, theme, symbolism, tone, setting, point of view, and syntax. Plus, the language is beautiful and aligned to the literary analysis papers which I will be teaching them to write.
Not only will "A Separate Peace" serve as a compact aide in teaching literary elements and formal essay writing, but it will great help in engaging students in a way other literary pieces included on the curriculum just cannot. If students can get really excited about this novel, I can make other reading suggestions for them in an effort to encourage outside reading. Whatever you can give will help my students to delve into American literature in an enticing and meaningful way.
