Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves 600 students grades 6-12 in the heart of Stockton, CA. We are a Title I school, with 79% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our motto is "College for Certain", every student has access to college prep curriculum and early high school college courses.
Our learning center is a vibrant, active space where students with a variety of special needs: ranging from autism to learning disabilities, from physical disabilities to emotional disabilities, access the supports they need to make "College for Certain" a reality for themselves.
All of our students are pushed and supported to reach their greatest levels of independence and success.
Our students with special needs prepare for their future with the same level of rigor and anticipation as their general education peers. We are proud to say that we have helped our students with special needs matriculate to colleges, vocational schools, sheltered employment and the work force. We have ensured that each of our graduates leaves us with a plan in place that is authentic to their own individual goals and dreams.
My Project
For the first time, our school is able to dedicate a space for a sensory room. The seating options and sensory materials I am requesting will be used by all of our students with special needs. All of our students, no matter the severity of their disability, are fully included in general education classes. While we do an excellent job of providing academic and curriculum support, one thing our students lack is access to therapeutic and sensory tools.
These materials will help all our students meet their sensory needs, and no matter their ability, perform at their highest potential.
A student with autism who is able to access deep pressure with the pressure roller I've requested is able to return to class more focused and ready to learn. A student with ADHD who can take a break and come bounce on the therapy ball I've asked for is better able to attend to academics when back in class. Students who are overwhelmed and need a break will be able to come in and access a variety of tools to help them self-clam, allowing them to go back to class sooner and more centered.
Overall, these materials will help all the students we serve and help them perform at their best every day.
