My Students
My students have severe and or profound intellectual disabilities. Some of them are vision impaired. Simple activities are complex and wearisome. My students don't see themselves as being disabled. For most they were born with the limitations and so it has been a daily part of their lives. The simple things that others take advantage of are the things that my students don't have. The ability to see colors, a movie, the faces of the ones that love them so. The ability to verbally profess their needs and wants are another limitation that my students have. The ability to be independently mobile. Jumping, running bending doing flips. These are the things that my students cannot do and will not ever be able to do. However despite their limitations they are happy and loving. They laugh despite of it all. As a teacher I have learned so much from them. I am grateful to be starting another year with them.
My Project
All students want to learn. The students in my class learn through various supports. We use adaptive switches, big knob puzzles, shape sorters, and adaptive sensory books. Touch and sight are very important modalities of learning for my students. My class needs a sensory center. A sensory center will provide physical and mental stimulus for the students in my class. A sensory center will help my students develop sound, touch, vision and hearing, as well as encourage their independence. Students will have the opportunity to use switches that will enable various devices. These switches will control lights, colors and sound. Students will develop touch skills by separating water beads from aquatic mammals. Students will use the touch screen tablets to access various interactive educational websites.
