Help me give my students with special needs a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help them develop, organize and engage their senses.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a title one inner-city school. I work with students in special education ranging from pre-k to 5th grade. Our students are energetic, loving and curious.
Our students are craving a safe space to calm themselves and ready themselves to learn.
The achievement gap is large and as a school we have decided to focus on the wellness of the overall child to help them make progress. Our teachers are hardworking, caring individuals who always go above and beyond.
My Project
Our title 1 school services 35 students with varying special education needs, ages ranging from PreK-5th. We are often underfunded in providing our children resources that they need in order to be successful in school. Please help us create a safe space for them to organize their senses and better manage their sensory inputs. The quiet time privacy cube will offer our students a quiet calm place to regulate their senses. The sensory ball and small weighted blanket will help provide the students the sensory input needed to calm down. The mini time timer will help regulate and monitor the time spent in the sensory room and ready the student to re-enter the classroom in a timely manner.
Help our children learn how to react and interact to the world around them.
Sensory rooms offer a safe space where students can engage different parts of their brain. A sensory room provides benefits in the level of engagement, positive behavior, calming techniques, absorbing/retaining information, fine/gross motor skills and daily living activity skills.
Our sensory room will be used for students with special needs to access throughout the school day whenever they are feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated or anxious.
