My students range from age 5 to 8 years old in a self-contained K-2 Autism classroom. They have high sensory needs and need supports to aid in task completion and self regulation. I want to help them learn while providing them with what they need and lots of love. They are embracing the power of *yet* and striving to meet all of their IEP goals. Each student is energetic and ready to learn in their own way. While our classroom is large, it is not furnished with sensory supplies needed to help keep my kiddos engaged and/or calm. As Maslow states, a child must have his/her basic needs met prior to them being able to learn and grow.
My Project
My classroom is filled with students who have high sensory needs. These fidgets (pencil fidgets, squishers, balls, and tangles) will help my kiddos stay on task and engaged in lessons by providing them sensory input while learning. The other items such as the Body Pod, sensory wrap, fiber optic wand, and multicolored light with help students with self regulation and calming techniques when they get upset, frustrated, and/or overwhelmed.
All of these items will be available to help my exceptional learners grow academically and socially/emotionally in the years they are in my classroom.
Students with Autism need extra help to keep them focused and engaged; that is what these supplies will help me achieve! Thank you!
