My students need a rug where they will have a spot of their own and won't be confused about where to sit or worry that someone is sitting too close to them.
Many of my students come from families who are in the midst of financial hardships, and because of this, all students in this school are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. It is my ultimate goal as a teacher to provide them with as many opportunities and as much support in the classroom as I can.
My role as a kindergarten teacher is to love my students first and teach them second.
In my classroom, we learn through social-emotional learning, we support each other, we celebrate the little victories, and we keep our heads held high when life gets tough.
My students have proven to me how resilient they can be and how they can make the best of whatever hardships get thrown their way. Financial support for my students will, not only relieve some of the burden from their families who already struggle financially, but it would also allow me to be able to provide them with the necessary learning resources that they need and deserve.
My Project
In my kindergarten classroom, much of the day is spent sitting on a rug. On the rug, we hold our morning meeting where we say good morning to everyone and go over our calendar, we listen to read alouds, have number talks, and we also use the rug for some whole-class instruction.
I've experienced amazing classroom management by simply having a rug like this inside the classroom.
Students are assigned spots and won't ever have to guess where they will sit. By giving students specific spots, they won't be confused about where their seat or worry that someone else is in their spot. Transition times will also be made easier and turned into a learning opportunity as students can be dismissed to the next activity by either the shape or color they are sitting on.
I believe that by having this rug in my classroom, less time will be lost in transition and confusion and more time will be gained for learning.
