In my classroom there is a community of learners that come from a variety of backgrounds and home environments. The students in my 12:1:1 special education class all are nonverbal students with autism and moderate intellectual disabilities. My class is made up of students in the 2nd through 5th Grade.
Each student in my class is unique; creating a diverse group of learners in my class with varying interests, strengths, abilities, and independent functioning skill levels.
Due to the varying sensory needs, what works with one student may not work with another. My students require frequent periods of sensory input throughout the day. What is required during while working may not be what is required during play. Everyones sensory needs tomorrow or the next day may be totally different as well.
My Project
I must keep up with my students sensory needs on a continuous basis. In order to spark in interest in our daily routines. Education is changing every single day, and so are the sensory input needs of my students. Students in my classroom like to wiggle, twist, bounce and sit in soft seating during group and work times. My current classroom doesn't have a variety of alternative sensory seating, so I would like to have wobble seats, exercise ball chairs and stability disc to meet my students ever changing sensory needs.
Students who receive appropriate sensory input are more attentive and willing to learn.
Helping students receive appropriate sensory input during work times will make their day at school more productive. Sensory input is one way to build better cooperation between student and teacher. Alternate seating is a gateway to better work time for reluctant students. My students will love getting the various seating options for our classroom.
