Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in an elementary music classroom involves a lot of movement. Movement is much needed for elementary school children, but structure is also much needed. A visible, tangible "home base" where students can go to sit after moving around the room provides this needed structure.
My students are eager Pre-K through 4th graders who love coming to music every other day!
The students come to music with smiles on their faces and songs in their hearts. They love to sing, play games, dance and play instruments! I couldn't ask for sweeter, more appreciative students to teach every day.
My Project
I am requesting this carpet for my classroom because young students crave structure. Naturally, my classroom environment is somewhat less structured that the regular classroom. There are no desks, just lots of open space so that the students can play singing games, create movement to various types of music and set up instruments so that they can create their own beautiful music! The students love learning in music and always give their best efforts but in order for me to provide a successful learning environment, I must find ways to create structure. One of the best ways to do this is to give all students a "home base" that they can go to after playing games in a circle or expressing themselves through movement around the room. The older students sit in chairs which are perfect for their size. The younger students are too small to fit in the chairs and must sit on the floor. Without this structure, the classroom would be a chaotic environment.
The 30 square spaces on this carpet will teach students about personal space and boundaries.
Having their own space to go to after whole-group activities reminds them that they are individuals and that they are special. Students will be able to practice "flipping the switch" between relaxed learning and concentrated learning by transitioning to a structured space in the room. By donating to my project, you will help me to create a more structured (and more successful) learning environment.
