I work in a school that serves a diverse community. I teach 45 third graders Math and Science. My students work in groups to investigate and collaborate in both subjects each day.
They inspire me to be a better teacher for them, and to be a better person for them to look up to.
They understand why they work so hard in school, and how it will help them later. My students walk into our classroom each day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I want to continue to foster their love for learning in an environment that allows me to provide hands-on, collaborative learning.
My Project
When I work, I want to be comfortable and sometimes it is not at a desk or sitting in a hard chair. Flexible seating will help my students sit where they feel they do their best learning whether that be by sitting on a stool, a ball chair, or on a bean bag. The new furniture will provide the students with a different option besides a hard chair. Many students also have attention problems, being able to move and change seating can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise.
With a variety of comfortable seating options students will have the chance to choose their seat to help them focus and excel in third grade!
They will be allowed to choose their seats as well as sit by friends. Classroom management will be easy because everyone will want to choose where they are sitting. Students with "below the line" behavior will not get to choose their own seating. Because of this, students will go above and beyond to follow rules and earn this privilege.
The materials I am asking for are balance balls, wobble cushions, and bean bag chairs. At four of our tables students will have the option of regular chairs, stools or balance balls. Two of my tables will be lowered to the ground so students can either sit on the bean bags or wobble cushions. Choosing their seats will allow students more control and ownership. They will be more engaged and focused!
