My Students

The students at High Horizons are hard working and bright! They always try their best and maintain good academic standing. They, however, are all from on of the most poverty stricken cities in the state of Connecticut.

Many of our students are faced with challenges outside of school that are heartbreaking.

Some have all the support and resources they need at home but there are many that do not. As the School Counselor it is my responsibility to ensure the emotional literacy of our students. I do this via classroom lessons, individual counseling, attendance interventions and group counseling.

I work with 442 students in grades K-8 who all reside in Bridgeport, CT. We have students with special needs, students living in poverty, students affected by trauma and crisis and many students with families that are very supportive but have difficulties outside of their control. I am the only counselor for all 442 students so I have to spread myself over the whole school and really have to plan my time in order to support them all. These kids are very near and dear to me and they absolutely deserve the best I can give.

My Project

The requested materials will allow me to provide and deliver a comprehensive program to target increasing attendance, decreasing suspensions and increasing academic performance so my students can be successful. Books like "Implementing Restorative Practice in Schools" will help me to create an environment with higher levels of contentedness among peers and staff. The small books like "Swimmy" and "Will I Have a Friend" will be used along with a school wide feeling and emotional intelligence curriculum.

These books are crucial for supporting emotional literacy and school connectedness.

I will use the games in a smaller setting with at risk students in order to increase engagement and relationships with students. Games allow barriers to come down and students to feel more comfortable. This allows for me to be able to better assess their needs and create a plan to help them be more successful.

In the 2016-2017 school year we have an average of 6.1% chronic absenteeism (students who missed 10% or more of the school year). At any given time we have 1-10% of kids who meet this benchmark for various reasons. Unfortunately, these also tend to be the students affected by poverty, poor academic performance and increased discipline referrals. In 2016-2017 we had 144 discipline incidents committed by only 21% of the school. There is a coloration between the absenteeism and discipline infractions. I am in dire need of resources to help support these kids.
