My sixth-grade students are each one of a kind. In my classroom, you can find a variety of races, ethnicities, languages, and more. Many of my students come from low socioeconomic households and face hardships outside of the classroom that one could only imagine. Within my four classroom walls, my students know they are accepted for who they are and know they are in a safe environment where everyone is welcome. Each of the students means the world to me and I would go to the end of the earth to help each of them receive the quality education they deserve.
In my classroom, I like to bring the mathematical practices my students are learning about to life.
I present content in a way that resonates with my students' everyday lives because I want them to leave my classroom being able to say that I taught them in a way that resonated with them. My students all learn differently. Some students understand best through watching, some through listening, and some through touching. My students each have a specific need when it comes to learning and I want to do everything in my power to meet those needs.
My Project
This school year will be like none we have encountered before. I want to provide my students with everything they need to be safe and successful from day one.
Preparation is an important component to teaching and keeping everyone as safe as possible.
In past years, I have used community supplies in my classroom. With many of my students not having basic needs met, school supplies are not always something they come to me with. In order to maintain safety, community supplies will not be in my classroom this year. If a child needs any type of school supply, I plan to provide that student with the item for them to keep. I use interactive notebooks in my classroom and hope to be able to continue doing so this school year; but only if I am confident I can provide my students with all the supplies they need, including scissors and lots of glue.
I like to use dry erase markers and boards to practice math problems but want to limit contact so I will not be using the boards I normally would. I want to give each student a dry erase sleeve to use throughout the year. They would be able to slide a blank sheet of paper, graph paper, or lined paper into it to practice the current skill.
Some of the larger, higher priced items I am requesting such as a paper cutter, electric hole punch, and electric stapler would greatly help with preparation for lessons. For example, I could pre-cut pages for their notebooks and pre-hole punch important handouts for students, leaving more class time for instruction and practice of skills.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my project. My future students and I greatly appreciate you.
