Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Whenever I tell people I teach middle school, the first reaction is usually something like, "How can you stand it?" or "Wow, that must be tough!" with the occasional "Oh, God bless you!" thrown in.
I used to feel the same way until I met my first group of seventh graders.
They are the best! Yes, sometimes the hormones go into overdrive, but my students are hysterically funny, have a great desire to learn, and are old enough to understand and discuss interesting topics.
In my classroom, I strive to create a space where kids can see themselves in the texts we read, build a love of books, and challenge themselves to become the best they can be! While my students don't all share the same culture, most share the same economic status. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite the challenges that they face, my students come to school willing and eager to learn. They have great plans, hopes, and dreams for the future. They are funny and bright, and I consider myself lucky to be their teacher.
My Project
Middle school can be a tough time for every student. There are new social situations to navigate, new teachers, to meet, and new subjects to master. But for some students at our school, there are physical challenges as well. For some of our students with physical disabilities, even sitting at a desk all day can be a challenge. Battling a chronic illness or coping with physical limitations can be exhausting, compounding the stress of the middle school experience.
An oversized bean bag chair would create a safe and comfortable place for these amazing students to rest and relax when their bodies need a break.
This soft and squishy retreat would give students the space to recharge their batteries so they can continue on being successful in the classroom. By supporting this project, you would be supporting some of our most awesome students in their quest for success. Thank you!
