Imagine waking up one morning to find that everything is amplified. The sounds of the cars passing by sounding like an 18 wheeler, the students walking down the hallway sound like a stampede, a "high five" feels like a slap, the glow from a light blinds you. This can be overwhelming for just one day. Imagine this is your life.
Our school has over 60 students on the autism spectrum.
They live this life every day while they are expected to meet state standards and follow the rules of the classroom.
My Project
Our students with autism have difficulty finding the words they need to express their feelings and frustrations. In our rigorous academic environment these students can feel overwhelmed quickly. When this happens they may act out with aggressive behaviors or shut down completely.
Everyone deserves to have a place where they feel comfortable and safe.
Our students can come to this room and use the battle ropes to release anger or feelings of anxiety and then jump in the ball pit to enjoy the sensory experience. When they have reset their minds and bodies they can return to class engaged and ready to learn.
