Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a first year, first grade teacher at Manierre Elementary School in Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood. My students live in the projects across the street from the school, and overall, do not have very stable or secure home lives. I have a wonderful class of eighteen children whom I have grown to love over the course of this year. I have worked very hard to make my classroom a safe and welcoming place for all of my students. They love coming to school, and they have learned to treat each other with kindness and respect. One of the places in my classroom that the children love the most is our classroom library. I have four large pillows and a rug in the library. The children love to relax and read there during independent reading time, or go lay down when they are sick. Although they all love the library now, I would like to make it nicer and more complete. The rug that is there is old and dirty and there aren't enough bookshelves for my growing collection of books. With the help of a generous donor, I would love to complete my library with more bookshelves, a new rug, and some comfortable furniture. This would truly make my classroom a comfortable safe haven away from all of the troubles that my students face in their lives.
