My students come from a school and area of high poverty. Despite this, I know they can achieve anything they set their minds to. I have introduced them to new ways of thinking and new ways to express themselves, and I am trying desperately to use all of my extra money to get materials that my students need. I feel that students are our future and, without the right teachers and materials, students will not be able to achieve all they could achieve.
My students come into school each day with a passion to learn.
They listen to me talk all day and still have questions. Their minds are sucking up the knowledge that I am teaching them, and I know when a parent comes in or calls me and talks about something from a lecture, I have done my job. I love that my students go home and say, "Do you know what I learned today?"
My students have the power to create their own futures. They just need a little help in getting there and the right materials.
My Project
Each morning we start with morning meeting in my classroom. This is a way to help foster a sense of community within our classroom. At this point, the rug that covered our floor has been removed, exposing a shiny floor that is not comfortable to sit on and often gets wet and dirty from outside materials. So, we have been making a circle out of chairs to sit on, but they are not as inviting as an area with a rug. Having a new rug to create this comfy flexible place to sit and meet will enhance our meeting along with creating a soft landing place for all to enjoy.
This rug will also help create a flexible place to sit and enjoy lessons being taught by me and others and allow students to work flexibly with each other.
They can come sit on the rug to bring the learning up close and personal. The rug will also create an area for students to work with each other before, during, and after the lesson. This will be an area for students to sit and read for enjoyment during our reader's workshop, during math interactions with manipulatives, during read aloud time, and during independent writing time.
