I teach a Special Education class of seven students that range from first to third grade. All of my students are performing below grade level in both reading and math. Many of my students are very shy and quiet and lack self confidence, especially during reading activities.
More than half of the students at our school are considered economically disadvantaged.
Despite this challenge, many families are very involved in the education process. Our school is located in a small community where "everybody knows everybody." This helps create a sense family within the school and helps the students feel comfortable.
My Project
My students need a new rug to help create a cozy area in our classroom. The rug will be used daily for community building activities, read alouds, and during independent work time.
Although my students are super sweet, many of them lack self confidence.
I have noticed that my students participate less when they are seated in their desks. However, when we are all gathered together in the front of the room, they seem more relaxed and ready to participate. This rug will allow us to meet and have meaningful conversations about stories that we read.
A new rug will also give us a place to participate in confidence and team building activities. Confidence is key when it comes to reading; a new rug will give us just that!
