Students in my school come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and with a wide range of learning abilities as well. My students are 2nd graders, and our school is a neighborhood school in a small, suburban community. Our school has pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students in it, and we have a considerable number of military families from Scott Air Force Base in our school.
In my classroom, I have military kids, students from single-parent families, students with special needs and learning disabilities, as well as students who are academically gifted.
My second grade students need a special place to sit when we have our class meetings and do whole-group lessons on the floor. This rug will provide each student with their own individually marked space, which will allow for more focused and engaged learners. Having a classroom rug will really help create a sense of community in our classroom. Each student will be able to have their own personal square on the carpet, which will help keep my wiggly second graders in one spot. This class rug will really tie the rest of our classroom together, becoming the focal point of our meeting area. We will share books, meet for whole-group lessons on our class rug, and meet for beginning and end-of-day meeting.
