I know this is an unusual request, but I am looking for a rug for my classroom. The reason why it may be unusual is because I teach 10th grade English at John Adams High School in Queens. Normally, it is the elementary teachers who request rugs. Let me tell you why a rug is so important to me and my students... Sometimes we feel that desks and the formal settings of the classroom stifle our creativity. I am constantly challenging these children to "think outside of the box" and sometimes it is difficult to do that in a formal classroom setting. One day a few weeks ago, I asked the students to get out of their desks and sit anywhere in the room that they chose. A few sat at my desk, a few sat on the window sills, but most sat on the floor. I continued with the lesson and to my surprise, there was a lot more interaction and creative, well thought out answers from the group sitting on the floor. I asked the group why that was and their response was that they "felt different on the floor." We decided that day to purchase a rug so that we could continue the flow. My AP loves the idea and gave us permission. But, we soon discovered that rugs are expensive. We did find a used one, but it was dirty and damaged beyond repair. Please consider fueling my student's creativity through helping us to purchase a rug.
