New York City truly is a melting pot and our 1st grade ICT class is no exception. We want our classroom to be inviting and inclusive. Our current classroom rug is only one color. We strive to make all things in the classroom accessible to all of our students whether or not they are classified with a disability.
Our students learn best when they are comfortable.
We do not insist that every student stays seated on the rug throughout a lesson. In addition to our rug our classroom offers are various standing boxes, cool down spots, and alternative seating so that everyone may remain engaged in the lesson. We do, however, insist that everyone has a place on our classroom rug for when they choose to use it.
Our classroom is a safe space to learn, explore, and grow. We want our students to feel a sense of ownership of the classroom and feel proud of everything inside of it. A rug that our entire class can sit on together will help our students feel comfortable while sitting together while also teaching them about personal space.
My Project
As in many early childhood classrooms, our rug acts as an anchor point in the room. It is a place for morning meeting, a place to share with friends, a space to build with legos, and a place to curl up with a good book.
A rug that is big enough for our entire class to sit together will only help us to create the tight knit unit we strive for.
Individual rug spots with clear borders will help even our wiggliest friends learn about personal space and aide in spatial awareness.
It is important that our rug have enough spots for each child to sit. Although sitting in their rug spot is not mandatory all of the time we do want each child to have a space in the classroom to call their own. We have many discussions and lessons on our rug; both whole class and small group.
Not having a rug large enough for all of our students is similar to not having enough chairs or cubbies. As an inclusion classroom we work very hard to ensure each child feels special while they are in our classroom and have equal opportunity to use all of the tools we have.
