A room without books is like a body without a soul.
~ Marcus T. Cicero ~ Your contribution will give my classroom and students more "soul"
We come from a very community oriented academic institution which like many have been greatly impacted by New Jersey's financial crisis.
My students range in mid to low socioeconomic status, are all different learners and individuals. I have a few students who receive free lunches and also have parents who have lost their jobs during this difficult economic time. I have other parents who are working multiple jobs in order to make ends meet, which means that school is the only time that their child's educational needs are met.
This budget crisis has made it difficult to purchase all of the things necessary to reach every student in my class. The one thing they all seem to have in common is that they all seem to be in love with books. They love to read, listen and write stories. I am so excited to embrace their enthusiasm as their teacher. I actually have a difficult time getting them out of the reading center!
My Project
I have requested cd players in order to establish listening centers in my classroom. Listening centers are a fantastic way for students to improve fluency and comprehension. Listening centers provide the student with an opportunity to listen to a fluent reader while following the story in a book. This is in turn reaching your auditory learners, and visual learners.
In addition to the cd players I have also requested books and CD's of these books that are on varying reading levels. I have students that are in basic skills and will benefit greatly from a lower level text being read to them as well as other students who are on a second grade reading level. First grade is the year that children learn to read, understand text, understand writing and really become book lovers. What a great way to engage each student in my classroom and facilitate their love for reading through listening.
In the world of education teachers are being asked to improve children's test scores in all areas.
The key to this success is through comprehension and fluency. Listening centers are a great way to facilitate these skills. Listening is a life long skill that will follow these children through their academic careers, every test they take and in their everyday lives. My children will greatly benefit from these resources. Any help that you can give is greatly appreciated.
