Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. Some come from shelters, large families, or foster care. Our kindergarten grade is secluded in a separate building, away from needed resources. For many, this will be the first time they are exposed to a school environment. They will have to learn many new routines alongside academics they have never been exposed to. Our classroom has to be a place where they feel comfortable and look forward to coming every day. Some of my students have been exposed to trauma early in their lives; therefore, affecting their social-emotional growth. Our class not only becomes a place of academic learning but a secure place to grow their social emotional experiences.
My Project
Before a classroom can welcome students it’s just an empty room with four walls. We are moving to a new class and the empty walls will need to be decorated and the class will need odds and ends. Bulletin boards will need borders and months of the years. Puppets that are in a box need a puppet stand to welcome students. Cupcake punch outs will be displayed to announce students birthday celebrations. Dry erase pockets will be used to decorate the literacy walls to celebrate and display students writing. A classroom is not just the walls in it but the decorations placed on it will create a welcoming environment.
