Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I school, EMS serves students with a variety of special needs. The ethnic and racial demographics of our community are a majority of Latinx and Black/African-American, with 88.4% of our students being eligible for free lunch.
While the challenges of poverty and racial injustice are legion among our student population, there is also a profound sense of the importance of community and family among them as well.
Our students come to us as experts in sharing, mutual support, and caring for each other. They value authenticity, honesty, and grit. They are incisively perceptive, deeply invested in justice, and so much more frequently kind than most would expect from middle school students.
My Project
My 7th grade students need literacy rich materials that include graphic novels and nonfiction texts. This project would allow my students to have books for shared readings and independent time in our classroom.
The more books children have access to, the more their love of reading is able to grow.
"Access to books and the encouragement of the habit of reading: these two things are the first and most necessary steps in education and librarians, teachers, and parents all over the country know it. It is our children's right and it is also our best hope and their best hope for the future.”
I have specifically chosen the classroom bookshelves from the Units of Study for 7th grade that I know my students will need to make our classroom successful. Our classroom is set up in a Blended Learning workshop model so these books would be accessible to them each and every day. My students will be choosing books that interest them and then spending time independently wondering and thinking, so it's important to have books that can reach each and every child.
