Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Students attending this inner city, 99 percent African American Chicago public high school have heard and read that the school is experiencing a renaissance. One element of the school that has yet to realize a "rebirth" is that of the high school student-produced newspaper. The student publication has not been published for decades and the only indication that journalism students once published a weekly or monthly newspaper is a copy of a 1963 edition that describes who this country is overcoming the assassination of its president. Why? The reasons are many, but a few of the reasons include a nearly 100 percent journalism class turnover rate. Further, these talented writers, photographers and designers do not see journalism as a viable career option. Instead, they view journalism as an "extracurricular class" to fill a course load that does not allow for early dismissal. This will change with the proposal I have crafted. First, three very deserving and energetic students will be able to afford a summer camp at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The students will assume the roles of senior editors and actually plan the first issue of the 2005-2006 school year prior to the September 2005 school opening. Second, students will work with nationally recognized journalism instructors and will learn various techniques important to newspaper production. Third, these three students will be the seeds for a rebirth of a newspaper that will improve communication among the school community--students, teachers, faculty and parents. Finally, the students will learn valuable skills important to a viable career opportunity--upholding Freedom of the Press. With your assistance, my journalism students will be able to attend an intensive summer camp--an opportunity financially out of reach for these students. Furthermore, they will give resurrect a long forgotten high school newspaper. Currently, the students publish a high school yearbook in my journalism class. Recently, they began publishing a daily bulletin for faculty and students. In addition, they publish eight parent newsletters per year. With your help, the school--already committed financially to paying for the publishing of a newspaper--will experience a renaissance in the area of a student-published newspaper.
