I am the guidance counselor at Albany Lower Elementary school. I am the only counselor in our Pre-K through 2nd grade school of about 500 students. We are fortunate that our parish provides each elementary school with a counselor but funds are limited when it comes to supplies and materials.
The counseling program has become a vital part of our students' academic success. I see hundreds of students who are referred to me for various social, emotional, and behavioral problems. Our school is in a very low income area. Private counseling outside of the school setting would not be possible due to the cost. This is the only counseling that most of these children will receive.
I am asking for these table and chairs in order to make the counseling setting more kid friendly. The counselor's office should be a place where children can come to freely express their feelings and deal with problems.
I like to think of our sessions as truly a "refuge from the storms of life" for many of these children. Believe me, some of them have had extremely "stormy" lives. We have also registered many Katina evacuees who have literally been through a storm and are trying to put their lives back together again. I feel fortunate that I can play a small part in that process. The block table and lacing boards would be awesome play therapy tools. Thank you for considering this proposal.
