Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just like Humpty Dumpty, our classroom pencil sharpener had a great fall. And all of the teachers, and all of the students could not put it back together again.
I work in an economically depressed area in New York City.
Most of my students' families fall below the poverty line. Many are on public assistance; many others are barely surviving.
Our school is at the crossroads of the world. We service students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, but they represent a global population of recently arrived immigrants from all across the world. They come to us seeking the opportunity to learn and share in the American promise.
My Project
My proposal is to provide all of my students access to a high volume pencil sharpener to ensure that they will never have a dull point. We recently received a DonorsChoose gift of pencils and pens, but now our sharpener needs replacing after its fall from the desk. Providing the tools the students need to write their notes and lab reports saves class time that would otherwise be wasted as the student searches for something with which to write.
In this way all students will be equipped to succeed in school, earn higher grades and minimize disruptions to the learning process.
