Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Marine Science to 9th graders at a small public school. Over 75% of our students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. The school has a strong design program and is based on an inclusion model. Two of my four classes are team-taught.
Many of my students have never been to an aquarium or the zoo, which makes it difficult for them to envision the ecology concepts we learn about. Students are tested on many of these concepts by the state so it's important for me to teach them authentically. With these water test kits, our live aquaria in the classroom will provide opportunities for students to learn about the nitrogen cycle in an authentic and hands-on way.
Students will be more prepared to succeed on their state test, and in college, if they attain a solid, experiential understanding of this important and foundational concept. The water testing kits will make it possible for my students to do a 3-4 week long investigation of the nitrogen cycle. Rather than learning about science concepts in a removed way, our students will get to DO science first-hand.
It's been said that "if you can motivate students, you can teach them anything." This non-traditional, hands-on way of teaching the nitrogen cycle is our attempt to motivate our students, many of whom are reluctant to engage academically. Testing the water in their own ecosystems will draw my students in and turn them on to learning science. Your donation will help to transform my classroom into the kind of enriching science learning environment all students deserve.
