My students need a reading nook! I plan to put this mailbox system and 5 new books into the "silent reading" corner of our classroom!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
''I have always imagined that paradise will be kind of like a library.''
-Jorge Luis Borges
As a child I spent hours in a reading nook, my dad made for me, reading of far off places and magical creatures. I want to replicate that experience for my students.
''There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island.''

This group of students I am working with are very reluctant readers.
I see it as my personal mission this year to ignite their love of reading. A majority of my students speak English as their second language. So it really does make sense that they are hesitant to be voracious readers. But their crazy teacher refuses to allow them to be uninspired by literature! I read aloud books in accents and voices, I buy them new books that fit their interests out of my own pocket, and I hope to piece together a reading area that will make them crave reading the way I do! Though reading in our classroom needs some work there are so many positive things to list about these kids too! I can't imagine a group of kids with more potential. They are so hungry for approval and to learn new things. They just need a little loving along at times.
My Project
My classroom theme is "Camp Greenwood." In my classroom we have a large orange tent with camp chairs for the students to read in. I would love to finish off this area with a mailbox system to use as a literature organizer so that they can have access to author study books or great picture books that show the craft of great authors. The books I chose to start off with in the Literature Organizer are all Caldecott or Newbery winners. I hope to inspire my little sweethearts to be just as talented readers and writers as the Authors I selected. I think there is a simple perfection in having a special place to read a beloved book. I hope to create the perfect place to discover the characters that can become my students' lifelong companions.
By donating to this project you can see direct impact on the literacy of a classroom.
I truly believe that this project will help me in my crusade to create a passion for literature in my classroom. Reading can one of life's great joys. But only if a student learns to love it! And perhaps just as important is the fact that reading is the one area of educations that is linked through every subject they will encounter. Building a strong foundation in reading now could not be more important!
