My students need a guided reading library with a range of books that fits their emergent to conventional reading abilities and book bins to store the books for self-directed reading.
I work with a wide spectrum of students who have varying abilities of autism. They learn at different speeds and rates compared to their neuro-typical peers. I have found, along with research, that students with autism learn best by doing and interacting with their learning materials, which provide them opportunities to make connections through their learning style.
My students come to school each day ready to learn, have memorable experiences and hoping to have their voices and actions accepted by their teachers and neuro-typical peers.
Every day we work on building a safe environment where everyone is accepted, engaged in learning, and learning how to interact with others. Each and every day I am amazed by their abilities and their growth in academics, social development, and of course their humor!
My Project
My students are varying ability learners with autism who range from early emergent to conventional readers.
This project will start our reading library from barely non-existent to a motivating library that has books for all reading abilities.
The guided reading book collections that range from Kindergarten through second grade will provide my students different ways to approach books.
We will be able to do shared and guided reading lessons, self-directed reading periods with writing about their opinions of the books, and to express feelings and thoughts about the books they really like using their words.
The assorted color bins will be place to organize and store our books for students to learn which books are "just right" reading books for them.
Reading is one of the most functional and fundamental needs that my students need to be able to traverse their school and community.
