Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a child, I remember discovering new worlds through books like The Magic School Bus and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Although my students may not have the home lives to support this, I want them to experience the same wonders of reading that I did in our classroom.
My students are smart, creative, and driven.
More importantly, they have minds like sponges and have a constant curiosity that words cannot express. They attend a charter school with an incredible staff, and their desire to please them is unbelievable. They are funny, sensitive, and deserve the opportunity to grow their minds as much as any other student.
My Project
As a reading teacher, I know the importance of solid, rigorous, differentiated reading instruction. I also know how important it is for students to have the ability to participate in peer reading groups and silent sustained reading everyday. For this reason, I want to dedicate a corner of my room to reading by updating my classroom library with two brand new leveled and categorized book sets. With these, my students will be able to independently select a book that not only interest them, but is also on their level. And what reading corner is complete without a reading rug where the students can feel comfortable getting comfortable on the floor.
The donation that you contribute has the potential to change the trajectory of each life that enters my classroom.
I witness so many students getting passed on from grade level to grade level without making any reading progress. Oddly enough, many of them are very intelligent, however, they have not bee able to see how reading can be of interest to them. With these materials, I want to change all of that so the question "Why should I learn to read?" never crosses their minds.
