A Reading Adventure to Peru

My students need 24 books about the country of Peru, including "Machu Picchu: City in the Clouds" and "Secret of the Andes".

"If we are going to learn about Peru this year, I think you will need a lot of books," Jessica grumbled as she helped me organize the books on the social studies shelf. Jenny loves to read to learn and she was not too happy about the prospect of competing for the ten books I had collected on Peru. I teach a third grade class in a school that provides over 90% free lunches. Most of the children come from households where the parents have to work more than one job to make ends meet. Also, English is the second language for the majority of my students.

Although a wonderful reading and learning environment has been created for my class, there are never enough books to accomplish all of our "reading to learn" goals. We study communities around the world. This year the country is Peru in South America. I've purchased maps, artifacts and some books, but I need more.

With enough books, I can assign children to work in small groups to find answers to questions that we will generate as a whole class. The books have to be written for children, and I found a variety of them at Barnes and Noble online.

Although I have been purchasing books, maps, and artifacts to use for our new unit, I just don't have enough for an entire class to read. I would be so grateful for any help you can give my class to bring additional excitement into our Peru study. Please help!
