My students love to read! Literacy is a huge challenge at my school, and the students struggle...but they want to read! Our Literacy Coach has been working hard to help us establish classroom libraries, as we do not have a Media Specialist at our school. Some of our kids haven't checked out books since middle school, but when given the chance, they can and will read great books! I want to have an awesome classroom library for my English I and English II classes so my students can be exposed to many different genres, including new favorites and classics! We do ten minutes of independent reading every day from a novel of their choice, and they are rising to the challenge. I love that they are developing a love for books, and I want them to have access to the best books!
My Project
The goal of this project is to begin filling the empty bookshelf in my room with amazing books for my amazing students! Books are expensive, and those of us who have great books take for granted that everyone has access to great books. They do not. I want equal opportunity for all students to read whichever books they want to read. I am working towards having a bookshelf dedicated to each type of literature in my classroom, and having it organized as much like a real library as possible to make students familiar with the process of checking books out. I don't want them to be intimidated by the process.
