A Rainbow of Recreation
The cost of a rainbow parachute, bean bags, and playground balls from Lakeshore Learning is $198, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Physical education and fitness are challenges for us all, and they are especially difficult for children who have special needs. Their parents, caregivers and teachers often struggle with how to present such activities and how to adapt them appropriately for the individual needs of the children within their care.
My special day class of 16 kindergarten and first and second grade students is in desperate need of physical fitness and a positive attitude about PE experiences. They need to feel the beauty and the joy of movement in many different ways and with a great "bag of tricks" from their teachers!
What we need are sets of visually stimulating and easy-to-use items that can make our PE experiences more "user friendly." If an activity is rewarding on many sensory levels, children are more likely to want to return to that activity again and again. We want to bombard their senses with fun as they learn how to become aware of their body in time and space. We want them to feel more confident and energetic as they progress through their school days, months and years!
Having a positive PE experience is very challenging at our site. We do not have many options on the playground for adapted PE activities. Furthermore, we do not have much to offer in the way of PE equipment. Our classroom does not have the benefit of a regular PE teacher, but occasionally we have someone come to adapt regular activities to a more appropriate developmental level.
We want to soar above the dull, gray world of PE as we know it. We want to see the bright, beautiful colors of the rainbow as we throw beanbags, bounce balls and play parachute games together.
To start our new PE adventures, we would like to request a multi-colored set of playground balls with numbers on them. They will not only teach us about sportsmanship and games, but also reinforce our color and number concepts. In addition to the balls, would like to have a set of colored beanbags in solid geometric shapes (cube, sphere, pyramid). While we are practicing our hand-eye coordination, we can also sort by shape and color and review our shape names. Lastly, we need a 20' rainbow parachute to build gross motor skills, following directions and team-building activities.
Please bring us out of our boredom with PE! Please help us to bring back the life, health and color to our cheeks as we move and laugh and learn together! We will soon be able to make our minds and bodies fit in many fun and colorful ways!
