My school is located in a low-income urban area. Our entire school receives free breakfast, lunch, and a fruit or vegetable snack every day. Many of my children come from cultures where English is not their native language, it is their second language. They are learning at levels of extreme variation, from being emergent learners to gifted and talented learners. For lots of my students, school is the only stable and positive environment in their lives. They look forward to being here and thrive on learning. They are seeking out an education that will help them accomplish their dreams, and now they need the tools to be successful.
My Project
With so many students facing social/emotional challenges, I would like to create a quiet, calm, take a break space in my classroom. This would be our "Reset & Return" spot. A place for them to go when they're feeling frustrated, anxious or overwhelmed. A place where they can learn how to self-regulate and take control of their emotions while working towards returning back to their learning in class.
Even adults need to "take a break" for a few minutes sometimes, so having space for my students to do this in my classroom would be amazing!
Social/Emotional health is as important as academics and needs to be taught just as much so that students are prepared to face challenges appropriately. This project will help me teach my students the coping skills they need to self-regulate on a regular basis.
