Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English Language Arts and Academic Support/Enrichment classes to students with diverse and special needs at a Title I middle school with 100% free breakfast and lunch. For many of my students, school is both their only safe refuge and a source of stress. Despite their struggles and challenges, my students come to school with a smile and ready to learn. They show me everyday that they are funny, kind, and hard working.
It is my goal to give them every opportunity and support possible to help them achieve their goals.
Sometimes this means adopting a classroom pet (or several), planting fruit trees, and inviting community members to visit. Other times it means following the stock market, practicing additive manufacturing (3D printing), and building portfolios. No matter what the interests of my students are, I want to be prepared to guide them to being their best!
My Project
For the past two summers I have been privileged to participate in the Infosys Foundation USA Pathfinders Institute. The support of like-minded educators, hands-on learning, and computer science skills that I have been able to spread to my students has been phenomenal.
It is my wish to continue the learning and professional growth by attending the Firia Labs: Introducing Python with Robotics.
This course will prepare me to graduate from block coding to a text-based programming language and implement that code with physical devices, like Microbits and the Codebot.
I am always seeking to broaden the opportunities presented to my students and to prepare them as much as I can for their futures. Experience with Python and robotics is a skill that my students can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
