I teach a culturally diverse group of kindergarten students who attend a magnet school for the Gifted and Talented. These students have a variety of life experiences; they come to school ready and prepared to learn. They are creative problem solvers.
I strive to provide my students with a warm and comfortable environment that will promote student engagement.
During Winter Break, my classroom is scheduled to have the old carpet removed. In place of the carpet, tile will be installed. My school will not provide area rugs, nor does the county fund the rugs. My students need an area rug for use throughout the day.
My Project
Kindergarten students cannot be expected to sit in a chair at a table all day long. We have to get up and move about during the day.
We are excited to get rid of the old carpet (which is close to 20 years old), but since our Kindergarten students will spend time sitting on the floor, we'd like to be able to cover part of the new tile with an area rug.
Students participate various activities throughout the day. In the morning, our day begins with a Morning Message, songs, and calendar math. Each of these lessons is done on the floor. Many of our whole group lessons occur on the carpet. During these lessons, students work on the floor engaged in activities that include: partner reading; independent reading; circle time; and partner math. Having a large area rug will provide a more comfortable place for students to sit and enjoy learning.
Additionally, since I plan to use this rug for years to come, many future students will also benefit.
