Transforming children is par for the course in the Title I, K to 5 school where I teach physical education.
We have one of the largest enrollments of English as a New Language Learners in any elementary school in our city. The challenges these kids face are amazing. Many are learning to speak English for the first time, even as they continue to develop and master their native tongues at home.
There are over a dozen languages and dialects represented in our school. This, along with the long hours of school and after-school program enrollments, severely limit time available for social interactions and the formation of meaningful friendships outside of school.
In every grade, there are students with special needs. All of the children are working hard to meet our newly adopted and rigorous Common Core-based curriculum. What is more amazing than all of this, however, is the dedication these students show day in and day out as they strive to reach all of their personal, social, and academic goals.
My Project
Teaching elementary Physical Education is always a delicate balance between fundamental skill instruction, learning rules for games and sports, and navigating the intricacies of teamwork and cooperation.
Sitting on the bench is never as much fun as participating with peers.
Unfortunately, students will sometimes need to take a break from the active play of the physical education classroom. A lightweight, portable folding bench would give students a place to sit and rest between turns or when stepping out of play to observe and analyze the performance of their peers. The bench can also be a safe spot for injured students to sit with our laptop or tablets and discover more information about our many health and fitness topics. The wireless mouse will give students an easier way to navigate on the laptop, while the messenger bag will allow them to safely transport the laptop and tablet, especially when we need to move outdoors during warmer weather. Finally, batteries will keep the wireless mouse and our other electronic devices fully charged and functioning. With your help, we will be able to help insure a continuing pursuit of health and fitness beyond our elementary school years.
