Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you are six years old, sitting for 15 minutes and practicing reading skills is the hardest thing you've ever done! Sometimes you can just struggle through, and sometimes in spite of your best efforts, you get distracted at the slightest sound or movement in the room. We need a focusing strategy!
My students are a diverse group including many English language learners, and our school provides free lunch and snack to the majority of the students.
Our school is in a rural area of California with many dairy farms. Our school is pretty new and we don't have a lot of extras in the classrooms for comfort.
My Project
As they use colorful reading cushions to help them focus, my students will realize that practicing their decoding and reading skills is a reward and an activity at which they want to spend quality time. They can pick a favorite color of seat pad and go find a private spot around the classroom floor to "park their pockets" and enjoy a book. First graders need exciting motivators to encourage them to practice, and a cute purple or green seat pad would have them fighting to see who would read first!
Many of my students live in home environments with little of the niceties most of us take for granted.
I would like to create in my classroom a safe, comfortable, and special place where they can trust and expect that wonderful things will happen. These rainbow colored child seat cushions will help them be excited and motivated to discover the wonderful world of reading.
