My Students

Every classroom needs a "heart", a central place where all the important conversations happen. For us, this is our morning meeting area where we greet each other in the morning and say goodbye in the afternoon.

I teach 1st grade EL magnet class.

All of my students are entering level English language learners. For the majority this is their first year in the United States and in school in general. This year my students come from Iraq, Sudan, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nepal, Congo and Malaysia. Some were born and lived all their lives in refugee camps, some had education interrupted by wars and conflicts. Several of my students are going through a silent period when they are still not able to produce any English words.

My Project

I would love to have a classroom rug for 20 people that would provide us with a comfortable place to meet for a morning meeting and sit through whole group instructions. My students are learning about the importance of personal space which varies in different cultures. A rug with little squares would be a great visual and a reminder about personal space and an inviting place to meet in the morning.

Having an inviting and colorful area would make our classroom a happier and more comfortable place.

Each student would have enough space to sit comfortably without being squished. It also would be a good visual to teach about personal space.
