Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 29 wonderful 5th-grade students, which include special education students, magnet students, English Language Learners, and intervention students. They are very enthusiastic about learning and are always eager to explore new things. They love coming to school every day, and always have a big smile on their faces, despite the socioeconomic hardships they endure in the community in which they live. They attend a school in California, in a low-income neighborhood. The school is both a regular and highly gifted/magnet institution. However, my students are part of the regular school and do not have access to the materials and enrichment activities that the magnet students have.
My Project
My students need a STEM space in the classroom where they can come together to solve real-life problems using science, technology, engineering, and math. We already have the technology part (Chromebooks) and tables. Now we just need the yoga balls to make it a fun and engaging center. The yoga balls will provide an alternative seating for those fidgety students who think better when they are in constant movement. When working in the STEM space, students will first discuss the problem. Then, they will use the self-adhesive sheets to plan how they would solve it. Next, they will use the self-adhesive whiteboard for the wall to work together and create a design or diagram demonstrating the process they will use. Lastly, students will confer as a group to discuss their solution to see if it is feasible.
The STEM space will be very beneficial for my students because this is where they can apply their critical thinking skills and let their imagination soar to become young innovators and engineers.
Who knows, we may have the next Nikolas Tesla or Sally Ryde emerge from this curious group of students.
