I am a new art teacher in a school with a very high poverty rate. I have students from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. While my students have many challenges both at home and in school, they are so eager to learn new things.
Art is a way for my students to channel their creativity and take pride in something they create from design to completion.
I take my job very seriously in that I want my students to love coming to school and get excited when they walk in. I want students to be able to find their own successes by working through a challenging process to create something of their own. Students are able to take ownership of their work and see their true potential. Art class is a break from the rigors of the classroom while still giving students the opportunity to think critically.
My Project
I would love to have a rug to add to our reading center/gathering space. I take great pride in the reading center in my art room that is full of really great art related books. I often read one of these books to tie our projects together. The only problem is that being the art room means I don't have carpet on my floor. Instead we have a very cold and hard concrete floor.
I would love to give my students a comfortable place to gather while we read and talk about about our upcoming art projects.
I am also trying to incorporate more flexible seating options in my room and many students enjoy working on the floor in their general classrooms, so I would like to give them that same choice in my room.
