This is a high needs school with enthusiastic young learners. They come from a small inner-city neighborhood where many immigrant families live. Half of our class receives services such as English Language and Title 1 Reading. Most children in this district receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students are very creative and express themselves in a variety of ways. When given the opportunity our students can work collaboratively and put their amazing, creative ideas into action. They never fail to impress me with their ideas and passion to create.
My Project
We are going to be studying, writing, and performing poems. Students will each receive their own journal to record their favorite poems and write their own poems. We will be studying poems from a variety of authors from the very silly, Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelustky, to the classic poems of Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams and Maya Angelou. These poets will provide the text from which we will create poems from our own lives and experiences.
These journals will provide a place for students to be creative and tell their personal stories through poems and art.
The children will go through a lot of pencils and erasers while writing in our journals. We will share and publish our favorite poems on posters made on the chart paper. Students will also create posters feature the different types of poems and poetic devices.
Finally, students will be able to share their work in a culminating poetry reading for their classmates. We will also perform and read aloud poems from other authors that we enjoyed reading. The journals will stay with the students in a hope that they will continue to write their stories.
