My students need a dedicated space for club meetings and student government. They have requested that this space be treated like a conference room complete with a refreshment bar and a water cooler.
We are a seaside community that has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our island town doesn't have a single home that was left undamaged. Many of my students homes are still uninhabitable almost a year after the storm.
We thought that restarting school would add a sense of normalcy to the chaos that permeates our students' lives.
In some ways it has.
One of the things I've noticed since we've restarted is that our kids are dealing with more than we ever expected.
My Project
When our students meet they ideally want to conduct themselves in an adult manner. After Hurricane Harvey, many were forced to grow up quicker than they might have otherwise. The reality of this is that they have taken a rather critical look at the space in which they conduct student business. They decided that this space should have a more "adult feel" than it currently does. In order to reflect that decision they would like to add a coffee bar, they already have the coffee machine; and refreshment area. The coffee refills are for the Keureg that they had donated. The water cooler is for those who do not want coffee or tea.
