As a teacher, I understand how important it is to build a comfortable community for your learners, especially with young students. Unfortunately, we do not have a place in the classroom to meet for our regular small group time.
I teach in a small neighborhood school in an urban city in Illinois.
I work in a terrific school with a wonderful staff. My classroom is filled with 30 eager and enthusiastic first graders. As their first grade teacher, I owe it to them to provide them with nothing but the best learning opportunities.
My Project
My students need a small group table. For any primary classroom, a central meeting spot is crucial. In the past, our meeting place for small groups have randomly rotated around the classroom from too small tables to the floor. We will be using this table for a variety of activities, including differentiated instruction and guided reading. Meeting in small groups will help create a comfortable learning environment. During differentiated small group time, students will be able to collaborate and build a sense of community. At guided reading groups, students will be reading books at their own pace and level while working to build comprehension within their groups. This table will allow me to monitor all activities and listen to each student read during guided reading.
It is my responsibility to make sure our classroom is a comfortable, safe place.
