My students are a diverse group of learners from all areas of our community in Florence, SC. Our school is a public charter school in its second year. Our learners come to us with positive school experiences and not so positive experiences. Some struggle with grade level content and some struggle because they have not been challenged enough. The diversity is amazing and our school encourages accepting each other, embracing our uniqueness and growing together.
Our learners are immersed in academics, but they are also growing into citizens that will use the skills they learn here to make a difference in their communities and world.
We utilize responsive classroom techniques to help students feel encouraged and to build community. Students engage in Project Based Learning to build problem solving skills and enjoy meaningful work.
My Project
My first grade students are developing a love for reading. They want to read independently, with each other and with their fifth grade big buddies. My collection of books is too big for the current baskets I'm using in our classroom.
A new bookshelf would give my learners a broader selection of books to choose from.
We do not have a school library and although we have access to reading online, these children LOVE to hold books and turn the pages.
This bookshelf, with wheels would also make it easier for us to move our collection of picture books into the shared space we use for buddy reading. A bookshelf will excite my students and help them grow in independence.
