A Place for Everything, and Everyone Will Have a Place

My students need a place to gather together. My students need their own personal spot for learning on the carpet. They need a carpet to sit on.

My Students

Since I teach Kindergarten, we do a lot of activities on the carpet. We probably spend half our time, if not more, doing whole group learning on the carpet. We start our day off here, and end the day there. It is so important the kids have a routine, and personal spot to always come to.

I teach 30 kindergarten students. They come from various backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is they come from high poverty homes.

Some of my student have a hard time leaving at the end of the day because they would rather be in school than go home. My students sometimes have a hard time sitting on the carpet, or staying in a spot for too long. However, they do like knowing they have their own personal things. They like knowing that at school they have something that belong to them. They have their own desks, and books, but not a carpet together with a personal spot. Since we do so much at the carpet, students need a special spot to come, listen, and learn. This carpet will help my students to feel welcome and part of our classroom.

My Project

When my students come to school, I want them to feel they are in a safe, fun, loving classroom environment to learn. The carpet I am seeking for my classroom will help my students feel this way. My students sometimes have a hard time staying in one spot for too long, however I feel this carpet will help them have their own personalized seat, on a leaf, to help them stay focused and stay within their spot. Personal space is something we work on when students first come to school and this will help my student keep their personal space. My student will feel pride knowing they have a special spot to sit and learn on the carpet. Currently our classroom is half tile and half carpet which is not ideal for learning. This carpet will be used for morning message, whole group learning, small group learning, and reading corner. I plan to also have this be a designated spot and focus, with the tree, to incorporate in the room everyday.

Currently in my room I used duct tape to create my own carpet rows and spaces for the kids however, they eventually pulled it up and played with it.

This carpet will help my students and the environment in which they will learn in. This carpet will provide my students with a comfortable spot for instructional time, as well as a routine spot for them to feel secure in. This carpet will change the dynamic of the room for students as there is not currently a place to them to function like that in.
