This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Elementary school students should spend just as much time on a reading rug as they do at their desks! I recently moved into a classroom with an old and worn out reading rug, and due to budget cuts, my school will not be able to provide me with a new one this year.
I'm a third, fourth, and fifth grade Special Education teacher in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
My school is a Title I school, and over 95% of its students receive free lunch. I teach in a self-contained classroom where all of my students have mild to moderate learning disabilities.
My Project
We need a new classroom rug that seats all of our students and has a little extra space for a reading corner. The classroom carpet is the place where all of our instruction takes place. Whether we're learning how to multiply and divide in math or editing a paragraph in writing, we're gathered on the rug. The rug is also the place in the classroom that some students prefer to read at.
Please help my new class of 8, 9, and 10 year olds by creating the perfect meeting center in the class!
A new, colorful classroom carpet would brighten up the room and provide "a place for everyone" year after year!
