"A picture is worth a thousand words", and today we see photographs (pictures) everywhere. As the students learn more about the camera, they are eager to experiment with different photography equipment but we don't have the funds to purchase it.
I teach in a high needs district where budgets are tight to begin with, let alone available for any extras.
Despite our budget restrictions I was fortunate enough to be given digital SLR cameras through an equipment budget, but I teach over 100 media arts (photography) students, many who are looking to go to college for photography. They are anxious to explore other photography equipment but we don't have the money to purchase anything extra.
My Project
Since I began teaching at this high school, we went from having 3 media arts(photography) classes to 4 media arts classes and 2 advanced media arts classes. We have doubled the amount of students taking the class and applying to college for photography. New equipment will help them to take their skills to the next level, making them more competitive as they apply for college and better prepared for the rigors of college level classes. Their passion is evident in their interest and creativity of the their work and I can't think of a better way to inspire them than with equipment that will enhance their photography skills.
This donation doesn't just effect the 130 photography students this year, but it will enhance the instruction of 130 students every year for the next 10 years or more.
Technology is thought to quickly become obsolete but in the case of camera equipment, these 3 lenses will last a life time. Creativity is important in tough economic times, as it allows students to explore tough issues and create beauty- their photographs are really worth a thousand words.
